We need to ensure that all images used on GOV.UK are created in the correct format and specifications.

This is because:

  • if the image is the wrong size, it will not display correctly on the page
  • we have a commitment to providing users with a consistent experience across GOV.UK web pages

Image dimensions and specifications

All images used in news stories need to be in these dimensions:

  • width - 960 pixels
  • height - 640 pixels

Images must also be in landscape rather than portrait orientation.

Portrait images are not suitable for use on GOV.UK news stories.

How to check if your image is in the correct dimensions (Windows)

Step 1

  • find the image that you want to examine on your computer
  • right click on the image

Step 2

  • click on the 'Details' tab
  • check the width and height of the image in the 'Image' sub menu.
  • ensure that the image is 960 x 640 pixels
  • in the example below, the image dimensions are too large

What to do if your image is not in the correct dimensions

If your image is not the correct size, please mention this in your JIRA ticket when creating a new content request.

  • we may be able to resize the image to fit
  • it is better if the image is too large (above 960 x 640 dimensions) rather than too small
  • if the image is too small, it may not be of a high enough quality to use on GOV.UK, and it would be better to source an alternative
