If you require an image to go alongside your content on GOV.UK, it is your responsibility to supply an image that is the correct size and orientation.

Images must be 960 x 640 pixels in dimension to be used on GOV.UK.

Crop images using Canva.com Photo Editor

Step 1

Open https://www.canva.com/photo-editor/


Click 'UPLOAD'


Upload the image you want to use for the story.

Step 2

Now select CROP from the top menu.

Step 3

Now you should see the Crop Tool options.

Change the two numbers above the image so they are "960"  and then "640".


Step 4

Now you have a selection box that is the right size for GOV.UK.

CLICK ON THE MIDDLE OF THE SELECTION BOX and then drag the selection box around until you have selected the most important part of the image

(DO NOT click on the four dials at the edges of the box)



Step 5

Now click APPLY.




Great, you've now successfully cropped the image to GOV.UK dimensions!

Save the image


All you need to do now is click SAVE.

Ignore this marketing message and click on 'Download Your Photo By Itself'.



Success! You have now saved a copy of the cropped image to your desktop.


General tips

  • Naming image files
    • give your image a descriptive file name (for example 'Female blowing nose with tissue during flu season'). Avoid meaningless file names like IMG00023.jpg.
  • Borders
    • avoid putting borders around images. The image should go right to the edge of the frame. Unless it is a campaign logo.
  • Read the image copyright standards on when you should attribute your image.
