Markdown is a form of code used to format web pages.

Markdown is used in Whitehall Publisher, the content management system which supports the GOV.UK website.

Government Digital Service (GDS) who manage GOV.UK have deliberately restricted the amount of markdown code which can be used in Whitehall Publisher. This is to ensure GOV.UK pages comply with style and accessibility guidelines. If you Google 'Markdown' code you will find a large array of code which cannot be used in Whitehall Publisher.

Therefore this section concentrates on the Markdown functionality which is available in Whitehall Publisher.

If you can access Whitehall Publisher, you should have completed a GDS training course, where you will have been introduced to Markdown and practiced it.

This section therefore contains a reminder of the (limited) Markdown functionality available in Whitehall Publisher, and links to some useful tools.
